About 370 million years ago, during the second half of the Devonian period, the ancestors of all land vertebrates arose from the oceans to exploit the untapped riches of land. It was an important step, both literally and figuratively, for evolutionary biologists have long believed that achieving the anatomical transition from functional fins to primitive legs required the fortuitous coincidence of multiple genetic mutations. However, it is not. A recent paper in Cell by Brent Hawkins, Katrin Henke and Matthew Harris of Harvard University shows that this process is driven by as small a single gene change as possible.
